This 6th installment of the Kate Shugak series is fascinating for its glimpse into both Native American politics and the two-edged sword of development of Alaska's natural resources. Fleshing out the details of this content would have required a longer book and might have turned off more action-oriented readers; but I considered exploration of these topics a major strength. The downside of Kate's latest adventure is multiple forays into criminal activity; and not of the "hero(ine) who can't wait for the rules in the heat of the action" variety. This is systematic; and it comes off as childish personal malice. It is a sloppy way to wrap up the book's subplot (Jack's ongoing custody battle) and resolve the main plot; and it diminishes the stature of two popular characters. Three stars: good main plot and supporting content; bad guys/gals thwarted in their evil scheming; an ugly turn for law enforcement characters. I've come to expect more of Kate.Product details

Always a good read. Kate has a clearly defined, realistic character with the blind spots we all have for one thing or another. Delightfully stubborn and her family loyalty is refreshing. Mutt is the perfect compliment to Kate.
I started this series of Kate Sugak novels with book 1. I wasn't sure it was my kind of read as I usually go for intense mysteries. Well, her I am finished with book 6 and just ordered 7,8,9. Have you ever been to Alaska? Kate is a native and a proud one at that. She sure gets into a lot of messes along with her dog, Mutt. I have enjoyed traveling through the bush with them. Ms Dana Stabenow is an awesome writer. I highly recommend this series. That's all
This started off well, but I got more and more disappointed as the story unfolded. There were too many coincidences in the mystery for it to be satisfying. And Kate starting breaking the law as though that was Ok because the ends justify the means. That's not someone I want to read about.
You know You are in the presence of the master story teller, when from the first sentence you are captured by the excitement of the moose appearing in your wilderness yard, hundreds of pounds of seasonal meat to keep you fed and the rifle many yards away but somehow you get to the rifle... I have read 4 of Stabenow's tales and every one keeps me entranced. Her poetry of word pictures and the wilderness feeling rings some kind of atavistic bell which sings to my soul. And the Necessary Mystery unfolds perfectly. Thoroughly enjoyable read. I am reading them chronologically because I know Kate will grow and change with time and experience.
As I mentioned in an earlier 5 star Dana Stabenow review, I was late coming to this party but I'm catching up fast. Can't put these books down. Kate, the kick-ass, independent, multifaceted heroine is terrific. Love characters who are expert at what they do and Kate is that, but she has her faults and her attacks of conscience are so endearing when they occur.
Another observation, each book I've read so far is refreshingly different. The characters remain consistent, but the way Stabenow writes each book changes slightly, just enough to amp-up the interest. Please! Keep them coming!!
I first read Stabenow's books many years ago and enjoyed them, but had forgotten about her until recently. I bought Blood Will Tell expecting a great read, but I simply couldn't get through the book. The characters didn't interest me and if there was a plot, I didn't get to it before I quit reading. The book was boring.
The great thing about any sort of series is that if you enjoyed a part of it, there is still more waiting. Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak series is one of those that from the first will have you wanting more. As always, I would encourage the reader to get the full list and start with the first, "A Cold Day for Murder." I think you will be hooked from the first chapter and it isn't just because Kate is an Aleut women living in Alaska with a half wolf named Mutt for a companion. Which brings me to another of the main characters - Alaska. I've spent more time on Google Earth, pouring over maps, and following the Iditarod than I ever expected to. Now, 60 years later, I'm rereading "Call of the Wild."
Kate's story and that of her life in an Alaska park where she is the perfect "crime solver" now covers 20 books and like her many other followers, I'm eagerly awaiting the next. If you are a mystery lover and many are starting to seem "old hat", The Kate Shugak series will be the perfect fix.
